Walking guide

Kok Tobe

Kok Tobe is an option for anyone who wants to see Almaty from above and combine a walk with a park visit. It has viewpoints and attractions, and a cable car is one way to reach the top.

What to see

Start with the city panorama, then decide whether to keep walking or add some attractions. Visibility matters for this outing: a trip for city views generally makes more sense on a clear day than when low cloud obscures them.

An idea for your walk

First decide how you will get up and back down. At the top, allow time to walk around and stop at the viewpoints. With children, leave extra time for rest and queues rather than relying on the shortest journey time shown by your navigation app.

When to go and what to consider

Before an evening visit, check the last descent and transport operating times. It may be cooler at the top than in the city. Add travel, ascent and queueing time separately to the suggested walking duration.

Admission and opening times

The cable car and attractions have their own prices and operating hours. Check the official price list and maintenance notices before setting off; an open park does not mean every way of getting there is available.

Where to go next

If you take the cable car back to the centre, plan your next walk from the lower station. Do not make a descent along unfamiliar roads a required part of your route.

How much time do I need for Kok Tobe?

We suggest allowing 1–2 hours for a walk at the park. Add time for travelling to the station, getting up the hill, queues and the return journey separately.
